On Friday, May 2nd, 2008 the Coda Program and the Wordsworth Beacon Center at Norris S. Barratt Middle School will present the Beacon Café Youth Showcase. The Beacon Café Youth Showcase will feature live performances from some of the most talented youth in the area.

We hope you can join Mayor Michael Nutter and the ASAP Philadelphia Youth Chess Challenge kids for the kick-off ceremony of the PECO-ASAP 24-hour Chess Challenge Anti-Violence Marathon on Friday, May 2nd, at 5:30 pm at Temple University's Student Activity Center at 13th and Montgomery Streets.
Come out and support the Chess Challenge kids as they "Checkmate Violence" and highlight chess as a positive anti-violence activity. Bring your chess board and plan to play!!

Join Art Sanctuary's afterschool arts students for a school matinee, North Stars, in Philadelphia Renaissance: From the Stoop to the Stage, a multimedia youth production incorporating music, modern dance, poetry, African dance and media arts to highlight the contributions of African American Artist born, raised or affiliated with Philadelphia.
Students will embody the personas of "Nina Simone, Pearl Bailey, John Coltrane, The Nicholas Brothers, Judith Jamison, Alaine Lock, and Jessie Fauset to help the audience experience the importance of African American arts and the overall contribution of Philadelphia born, raised or affiliated artists in our culture.

Violence is a major social problem transforming our homes and communities from safety zones to war zones. This workshop is designed for practitioners, human service workers, teachers, probation officers, and community leaders interested in solutions for dealing with violence in both the home and external environments.
Featured speakers are the internationally acclaimed Just Therapy Team (Taimalie Kiwi Tamasese, Maria Maniapoto, and Charles Waldegrave) of New Zealand, Dr. Kenneth V. Hardy, co-author of Teens WhoHurt: Clinical Interventions to Break the Cycle of Adolescent Violence, and a diverse panel including Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey, Reverend Dr. Alyn E. Waller,and other invited distinguished guests.

Philadelphia Compact - A Citywide Commitment to the Healthy Social and Emotional Development of All Philadelphia's Children announces the Children's Mental Health Awareness Day Celebration 2008; Information Expo for Teens and Their Families.
A resource and information fair for youth/teens and their families will be held on May 13th, at Love Park in recognition of National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day and National Mental Health Awareness Month. Providers of adolescent behavioral health services, youth mentoring and leadership programs and violence prevention programs are welcome to staff resource tables that will be made available for that day, at no charge.
Space will be limited. Each table will be used to support two (2) organizations. Participating providers may have a maximum of 2 staff at any one time at their table.
